Moose Antlers in Late June

On our recent trip to Stratton, Maine (June 23-26, 2002) we met two grown male moose in addition to O'Susannah (cow) and Denny (young female or male). The male on the left ran ahead of us on the bumpy dirt road when I was nodding off in the passenger seat. By the time I woke up, put on my sandals, grabbed the camera and jumped out of the car, he was ready to move on into the woods. My guess is that he is somewhere between 4 and 6 years old judging by the size of the antlers. (Please correct me if you have a better guess.)

Route 16 Moose

The male on the right was hanging out in the mud next to route 16 a few miles west of Stratton one morning as we drove by looking for the start of our hike. I'll bet he's around 2 or 3 years old. It would be fun to see both of these moose in the fall when their antlers are full size for the year.
