Day 1 - Maroon Lake Trailhead (9600 feet) to West Maroon Creek Basin

Trip OverviewDay 2 >

Pika on a rock watching us pass by. Pika peaking out of a crack to see who's passing by.

Pass Crater Lake (10,076 feet) which has many numbered, well separated campsites. Pikas seen on trail above Maroon Lake and at Crater Lake. Many Pikas in talus slopes on the right side of the valley.

West Maroon Creek is crossed twice. The first crossing is a somewhat broad, braided, shallow crossing. The second is narrower, deeper, swifter and more difficult. After we crossed the first time, there were campsites in the trees and the weather was deteriorating (it was never sunny that day). The first crossing is about 3 miles from the trailhead. We camped not too far after this first crossing, somewhere in the vicinity of 10,600 feet. Our group had 4 tents that were a challenge to site. There are many more sites for smaller groups (1-2 tents). It rained most of the night.
